Aschaffenburg Germany Revisited |
Motorcycle Ride to Aschaffenburg, 15 May 2005 by Chris and Lee |
The Aschaffenburg Military community became mostly closed in 1992. 3rd Infantry Division, 3/12 Field Artillery (Lance), 9th Eng., 26th Support, 557 Maintenance Co.....and all the rest, are all gone. Most of the barracks are now either converted into housing for "asylum seekers" and others... OR they are falling down/being torn down. The NCO/Enlisted Club is gone...not even the parking lot. The elementary school is weed choked as is the Chapel. The AAFES gas station and the Burger King are gone...not a trace! Do you remember the German/American Friendship Fest? Well, they have built up a shopping area over the motor park where the fest used to be. There is only some housing left now (from what we were told, about 15 units or so...), and most of that will be gone in the year if what we heard is true. The few Americans that still live there commute to Babenhausen for work. The town has changed, yet stayed the same. The Old Irish Pub is still there, but has a different name (still looks like it used to though!), the "triangle" is there, but Gatsby's, Liberty's, and Logos are not (Gatsby's is now a Chinese Restaurant, not sure what the others are). Last time I had seen A'Burg was 1990/91. Many changes have occurred throughout the city and the "former military community." Was good to see it, but will probably be the last time I visit. |
